Mozart’s graceful quintet for horn and strings (1782), is unusually scored for one violin, two violas, cello, and horn, producing a work that rejoices in the rich alto register of the horn, performed by the exceptional natural horn player, Carla Blackwood. The program also features Beethoven’s much-loved, momentous septet for violin, viola, cello, double bass, clarinet, horn, and bassoon. The six-movement work was first performed in 1800, and is a superb example of the composer’s Classical period imbued with vibrant colours through its unusual instrumentation.
Genesis Chamber Series presents programs throughout Victoria featuring some of Melbourne’s finest historically-informed musicians in chamber works from the Baroque through to the early 20th Century performed on period instruments.
